laptop crashed, need advice on buying a new one ASAP?

i’ve had two laptops in the past 2 years:

a Dell Inspiron 8600 and a nearly new HP Pavillion DV9000us.

and BOTH have given me the blue-screen-of-death, said “unmountable boot volume” and never started again. i spent over 1,000$ to do data recovery on the Dell, and got almost nothing back. HP promised that the second hard-drive in the Pavillion would kick in, and prevent these sort of disasters.

point is, i’m a college senior (with ALL my papers, exams, class notes, etc on my laptop) who owns 3 websites (and subsequently does graphic design). and everytime my laptop’s hard-drive crashes i lose everything. and i can’t DEAL with this anymore.

(in both crashes it was a physical hard-drive error, one involving a ball bearing coming loose, and the other.. god knows)

i NEED to buy a new laptop THIS WEEK, one that’s durable, and from a brand that has a good track record of customer support and reliable, well-priced, notebooks. something that’s bulletproof.

My computer completely wigged out tonight. (I’m on my dad’s right now.) It was fine…I was playing an online game (WoW)…was exiting it and it froze up on me.

Trying to restart, this is the screen I got.

“we apologize for the inconvenience ,but windows did not start successfully. (etc etc) start in safe mode, last known good configuration, start windows normally” — none worked

I am operating on a Sony Vaio computer (VGC-RB40) which means the computer didn’t come with a Windows backup CD. However it does have a Recovery Wizard on it. I attempted doing F10 and going through that, but when I come to the screen which SHOULD allow me to do a Windows System Restore, that option is faded and I can only choose the complete recovery (aka losing all my data). The problem is that I don’t have quite a few important things backed up and I don’t want to lose all that data.

When trying to boot safe, stops at $sys$cor.sys before rebooting back to first screen.

When i turn on my laptop it goes to a black screen and then in white letters it says:
Windows failed to start. a recent hardware or software change might be the cause. to fix the problem:
1. Insert your installation disk and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click next.
3. Click repair your computer

If you do not have this disk, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

I have 2 Recovery and applications/ drivers disks, but when i put the disk in the laptop nothing happens.

Anyone know???

external HD stopped working?

so, my acomdata 250gb external hard drive wont turn on. the AC adapter light is on, but the HD light is not on and it is making a clicking noise. im screwed, arent i? this was the back up of my intel mac mini and also holds all the pictures i have taken since 2004, not to mention about 200 g of other stuff. data recovery by some expensive means is out of the question. is there some way i can take out the hard drive and attach it somewhere else, just to get my pictures? i have a windows vista and an ibm thinkpad lying around.

How to fix “Missing Operating System” on Sony VAIO, BIOS shows HDD still there but shows 0GB on main.?

Can’t use the F10 function to use the hidden partion recovery program. Not from boot up, not from BIOS. HDD still displays in the Boot menu, can select a different boot option and then choose Internal Hard Disk Drive) however on main screen says “0GB” for the HD. When I let it boot, it comes to “Operating System not found” and repeats the message periodically when waiting. I came home with it on and friend’s toddler was playing on it, not sure what toddler did or possibly could do. HDD should be approximately 500gb with 200gb+’s in use so don’t know what the 0 display is.

My current guess is to use something like Ubuntu or other CD OS and try to recover what I can to external and and run program from there but not sure if data is recoverable or not. Ideas? Options? Diagnosis?

Points for best information / step recommendations.

Windows 7 on Sony VIAO All-in-Wonder device with touchscreen. Keyboard and mouse are wireless and packaged with tower/moniter and sync’ed without USB. RAM 4G, i5 processor, 500g HDD.

Model VPCJ116FX unmodified. External HD is Toshiba something housing with old Dell 500g HD. External files secure.

Can’t think of any other important information.

Bit Defender was the anti-virus but don’t think it was a virus.

Security pack was current, last full system scan was two days before crash yielded no results.

But there are 2 drives, Vista64 with 149GB of space and Data (D:) with 138 out of 138 GB of space. This can’t be the recovery drive, not taking up 138GB. There is only 1 file in there, msdia80.dll. Can I use this drive to store stuff? I just bought a new laptop that said [...]

What to do about a dead hard drive?

I was on my laptop today (sony vaio) it was acting completely normal when the blue death screen popped up saying my computer had a critical error and was restarting…so it did, but when it did it wiped out the operating system (windows 7).

From what I understand this means my hard drive is dead? Is that right?
No I am no on the dead computer now, i’m using my phone.

The laptop is only a 1 1/2 old, and it didn’t come with any recovery disks because everything was pre-loaded onto it. So, no help there.

This is where my complete lack of knowledge comes in…can you fix a dead hard drive or is the computer no good..How much does it generally cost? Or am I looking at new computers tomorrow?
I don’t really care about any of the data most of my pictures and documents are backed up on disks.
